Goodbye, then Pitch Battle. The BBC confirmed this week that its Saturday night choral contest, which debuted this summer, won’t be back for a second series. I’d say that news of its axing is a shame for Pitch Battle’s fans but, well, there weren’t many.
It’s just the latest body-blow in a bruising year for crooning contests. So is it time the entire genre was packed off to the great TV graveyard in the sky?
After all, it’s not as if we’ve stopped watching Saturday night talent shows entirely. Strictly Come Dancing continues to break its own ratings records, going from strength-to-strength while its former arch ratings rival The X Factor flails. It just seems to be singing series that we’ve fallen out of love with.
